The inaugural concert of the 66th edition of the Festival dei Due Mondi boasts a fascinating programme. It is entrusted to the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, in its third year as resident orchestra at Spoleto, under the guidance of the talented Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša, who was recently appointed to succeed Antonio Pappano as music director of London’s Royal Opera House.

Music by Leoš Janáček is at the heart of the programming, and Brno-born conductor Jakub Hrůša is one of the Czech composer’s most respected interpreters, his recent performances of the opera Káťa Kabanová at the Salzburg Festival winning great acclaim. Janáček’s music is some of the most expressive of the 20th century. This concert opens with a newly-written Suite by Hrůša featuring sung scenes from Janáček’s famous opera, The Cunning Little Vixen. Inspired by a serialised novel for children, the story of the fox, Bystrouska (cunning), is a unique piece of musical theatre, the animal’s vicissitudes providing an opportunity to reflect on the theme of the relationship between man and nature that underpins the entire Festival programme. The work has a highly evocative folk dimension: Janáček at the turn of the century researched Moravian songs and dances, one of the hallmarks of his musical and ethnomusicological research; the Lachian Dances are his joyous and personal take on the folk melodies and traditions from the eastern Czech-Slovak region of the same name. The programme closes with Sinfonietta, perhaps Janacek’s best-known work – a homage to the streets and symbolic places of his native city.
