Opera is back at the Spoleto Festival, with a new staging of one of the most fascinating titles in the repertoire, Claude Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande. The performance is entrusted to the Budapest Festival Orchestra led by one of the world’s greatest conductors, Ivan Fischer. Music will be at the heart of this production, with an unconventional staging that, like all previous operatic collaborations between Fischer with director Marco Gandini, unites the worlds music and theatre. The international cast is spearheaded by Bernard Richter as Pelléas and Patricia Petibon as Mélisande. Nicolas Teste performs the part of Arkël, and Tassis Christoyannis of Goloud. The costumes are designed by Anna Biagiotti and the sets by Andrea Tocchio.

“I dream of poems that do not condemn me to drag long, heavy acts; that provide me with moving scenes, very different in character; in which the characters do not argue, but suffer life and destiny,” wrote Debussy, who had chosen Maurice Maeterlinck’s drama to embody a new theatrical ideal. Debussy noted that the writer was capable “of saying things halfway and creating a story without place and without time”. In this non-place, Pelléas loves the diaphanous Mélisande, wife of his brother Golaud: but on discovering their feelings, Pelléas and Mélisande know their love is already doomed.

Like the Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, Pelléas et Mélisande is the perfect synthesis of Claude Debussy’s musical art: written at the start of the new century, this unique musical drama marked the dawn of a new operatic era, bringing with it a profound change in style and language.
