New creations & big dreams Yaron Lifschitz / Circa
Under the inspiring and visionary leadership of artistic director Yaron Lifschitz, the internationally-famous Australian circus group, Circa, performs a version of Igor Stravinskij’s unpredictable and spectacular Le Sacre du Printemps. The staging, filled with whirlwind acrobatics and thrilling action, will be the first ever of the ballet by a circus company.
In the pagan rites of Sacre, the artists’ bodies contort, lie motionless and unravel in virtuosic acrobatic movements, offering a wild and tender interpretation of a work that many perhaps consider to be reserved to dancers and choreographers.
The ensemble, whose output is often hailed as revolutionary, transforms theatre into a “total” art, pushing the boundaries of the genre and inventing a new language capable of combining movement, dance, theatre and circus.
With Sacre, Circa reanimates Stravinskij’s work fifty years after the composer’s death, with the kind of innovative and modern spirit that made the ballet so scandalous and revolutionary at the time. French composer Philippe Bachman’s music accompanies that of Stravinskij, giving life to an aural universe in which moments of calm are followed by musical storms, amid thrillingly powerful, physical explosions.
